American Idol Top 9

April 6, 2010

“Tonight’s theme is the Lennon/McCartney song book.  Hopefully the contestants can tackle these big hits and not mess it up.  This is one of those nights where you want them to make it their own yet stay close to the essence of the songs because they are already legendary songs. And instead of a mentor, the contestants talk about each other.  Lame! Tonight was actually pretty good as a whole and there were some interesting instrumental additions”

The scores are based on vocal ability, appearance, song choice, personality, stage presence and impact out of a possible 30 points! EPIC (29-30) GREAT (27-28) GOOD (25-26) OK (23-25) FAIL (22 and below)

Here are the guy’s grades in order of performance:

Aaron Kelly 26

After singing last, last week, this week he is singing first.  On the video, they talk about how they consider Aaron “Yoda” from Star Wars?  Really?  Hopefully his singing is far from.  Interesting his fun personality off-stage is absent on stage tonight.  He was kind of blah and predictable.  His song choice was so Country and it fits his voice very well.  A little pitch problems here and there but it’s the same old song we have seen every week and nothing new.  He knows what artist he wants to be and for the most part he does an ok job, but nothing spectacular and being first doesn’t help.  This will test is Tween and Grandma vote?

Elimination: So-so (After a lackluster performance, will his fans still vote.)

Katie Stevens 28

Now Katie on the other hand is a girl who doesn’t really know who she wants to be.  Wait, she does the Beyonce dance, from this era, yet she sings like she’s in another era? Let it Be is her song choice. This doesn’t sound promising.  Pleasantly surprised! She didn’t do too much with the song but what she did do was sing the song well.  I think this was her best performance!  Sometimes you just need to pick the right song and sing it well.  Not a difficult song to sing but a good performance.  Also, I think Kara needs to stop singing, her little vocal examples..no thanks!

Elimination: So-so (She’s been in the bottom 3 two weeks in a row, why would that change?)

Andrew Garcia 26

After coming back to the game last week, will he continue on a climb or will he settle back into his settled ways.  First, contestant comments! Yeah, we got that he has a great personality but it sometimes disappears on stage.  It’s a pity, I used to be a fan, because watching him tonight makes me wonder why I was such a big fan of his earlier in the season.  The performance was okay but there was something missing.  His eyes always look like he’s tired or high, I don’t know. It was okay I suppose and the arrangement wasn’t very good.

Elimination: So-so (Huge fan club, not the best vocal = uncertainty)

Michael Lynche 28

Okay, I am over these comments.  They almost seem like they are fishing for something fun to say.  Will they really say that someone sucks on national TV and forgo some votes for the truth?  Of course not!  Michael, however, seems like a great guy, so Mr Hulk, Teddy Bear, etc, will you continue your amazing run for the title?  Uh oh, singing a David Cook classic?  Interestingly changes it up and he sounds great.  A completely different contrast to David’s version and it worked for his RnB style. Dramatic and amazing!!  I think Simon was wrong on this one tonight.

Elimination: Very Safe (Still better than everyone else who has gone before him tonight!)

Crystal Bowersox 29

And she is sick today?  Uh oh.  Mamasox?  Okay comments are just sounding the same at this point.  This week she has a different method of choosing songs, will it work for her? Of course it does.  She is Crystal Bowersox, the super front-runner of this show.  I don’t think she can make any mistakes.  She isn’t even competing anymore; she is just performing and doing what she does best.

Elimination: Very Safe (Until the top 3, I don’t think she can do no wrong!)

Tim Urban 27

I feel like tuning out everything being said because besides that smile, is there really anything else they can say about him?  Of course not!  Brighten my day by going home please.  Okay, let’s see what he does tonight with the song he can Smile to apparently.  His hair matches this era so well.  Weirdly sounds pretty good tonight.  His second best performance behind Hallelujah which is saying a lot but not saying a lot as well!   (OMG Ellen said the exact thing I said)

Elimination: Bottom 3 (Why not, he has been second to last for the last few weeks. One good performance, I hope doesn’t mean he will stick around!)

Casey James 30

So Casey is the Playboy of the group and has a crazy laugh.  Okay? Thank God this is a singing competition because he has a much better voice worth talking about.  He went for a slow song and showcased his amazing vocals in a stripped down approach and it worked well.  In the end, he gave another great performance and showed another side to himself especially in the second part of the song which really portrayed his vocal abilities.

Elimination: Super-safe (He has nothing to worry about for another few weeks)

Siobhan Magnus 27

Last week she proved she had a big fan-club as her poor performance still saved her from bottom 3 status! Question is, will she jump right back from it or will she continue on a free fall?  Okay weird and interesting.  Another obvious profile of something we already knew.  Another stripped down performance, but this time her vocals seem off, especially in the first part of the song.  She did come back though in parts, but overall I don’t know if I loved it or not.  But that last bit that almost brought her too tears, almost brought me too tears.

Elimination: So-so (That last bit might have just won her some votes, but like I said, she has a fan club and they will probably vote anyway.  This one’s tough?)

Lee Dewyze 27

Lee nailed it last week and he’s closing.  How could this not have worked out any better for him.  Resident worry-wart?  Sounds about right!  Even though he doesn’t say it on stage, we can see it.  OMG, Danny Gokey babies hit it right on the head! It’s funny.  I love his voice and he actually showed a lot more confidence tonight but that bag piped was just un-necessary and the fact that Lee wanted it on was quite funny.  The song itself is the perfect show-ender and he performed it pretty well, but vocally it wasn’t his best, but that really doesn’t matter at all.

Elimination: Very Safe (More Lee for another few weeks)

My top 9:

  1. Casey James
  2. Crystal Bowersox
  3. Katie Stevens
  4. Michael Lynche
  5. Lee Dewyze
  6. Siobhan Magnus
  7. Tim Urban
  8. Andrew Garcia
  9. Aaron Kelly

Final Thoughts: It gets tougher to score each week the more you get to hear and know the contestants.  The singing was good tonight and I definitely think there will be more surprises in the bottom 3 like Andrew and Aaron, although Andrew has been lucky for the last few weeks so it’s not so much a surprise but catching up.  Aaron unfortunately, wasn’t bad but was the weakest of the night and Katie may have saved herself.  I do think Tim, Katie or Siobhan are still in danger, but Aaron being the first of the night and the weakest may be eliminated

American Idol Top 10

March 30, 2010

“So now we get some behind-the-scenes after the performances and a 2-hour show.  What does that mean?  More un-necessary footage and commentary from the judges to confuse the contestants and a lot more critique from this week’s mentor!  Although this weeks mentor is actually quite credible and made a lot of great performances happen. This was by far my favorite night for the entire season.  3 perfect scores and everyone was good despite a few missteps. ”

Siobhan Magnus 26

Her awkwardness is actually quite appealing.  Usher didn’t expect that voice like most of us when we first heard her.  Her fashion sense and her quirky personality make her unique and that vocal ability sets her apart.  Tonight, somehow her vocals and appearance were off.  Even that high-note didn’t work out and there was a lot of pitch problems.  Her weakest performance of the season so far and that last note seems like a signature high for her, but tonight it was too much.

Elimination: So-so (This is the first test of her popularity.  Not a good performance.  Has she been coasting or does she have a true following.  We will see!)

Casey James 29

He’s right.  What better theme than rnb/soul which is so close to his blues genre.  This should be his comfort zone.  Verdict?  He nails it vocally.  Everything works except his look.  Someone I almost wish he had a beard or a goatee because he looks like a pop-star with that big bluesy voice.  That aside I guess he is a commercial blues singer.  His best performance to date though and Simon was on point.  Don’t understand what Kara or Ellen were hearing because he showed a lot of range and performance ability.  What the hell is this show going to do without Simon?

Elimination: Very Safe (Start planning your next performance!!)

Michael Lynche 30

Connecting with the audience, I am pretty sure he has no problem doing that.  I was worried because the first time he had a guitar on him in the very first episode, he was kind of corny and didn’t connect emotionally, so I was legitimately worried.  However, this was night and day and an amazing acoustic rendition of the song and if the judges were looking for a moment, he had one!  Outstanding vocals and even if it was a gloomy song he sold it.

Elimination: Very Safe (He’ll be around till the end if he continues on this route)

Didi Benami 25

She had an emotional connection to the song and a moment that caused her to cry in front of Usher.  Will she translate that on stage?  No.  The arrangement and the key changes unfortunately didn’t work!  I thought it was theatrical, dramatic and overdone for no reason.  Was she trying to create the emotion through dramatization?  She tried to show some range, but it was a little too forced and a little too much.  I wish she translated her emotions into a much more simple arrangement that let her vocals speak for her emotions.

Elimination: Bottom 3 (Not good.  This could be her downfall)

Tim Urban 26

Why is he still here?  The abs?  The hair?  And the way he sung that song to Usher was right on point on Usher’s part.  I didn’t believe it either.  Will he connect to the audience?  No. His eyes just looked so vacant on stage.  He looked like he was trying to make sure he got the vocals out and although they sounded good, it was just boring and plain.  The whole performance was so old-fashioned and cruisy!! Last week he was singing to his target market and this week he was trying to reach a new crowd and it didn’t work.  Unfortunately for me, he has a huge fan club and that may keep him around, although I am hoping for a different result.

Elimination: Bottom 3 (He was there last week and this performance didn’t really gain him any points)

Andrew Garcia 28

Is he back?  A great acoustic rendition of the song and more in line with Andrew’s type of music, but am I digging it because I like the song or is it because he’s done so poorly the last few weeks that its refreshing to see him back on track.  Maybe a mix of both which I think is very smart on his part.  His fans may have rekindled the love for him too. The judges comments of course, were overwhelmingly positive but is it fair to glorify him for it?  I suppose being a former favorite for the title, its acceptable and worth the praise, but will it continue or is it a fluke?

Elimination: Safe (Should be safe considering the positive feedback but has the previous few weeks caught up to him?)

Katie Stevens 27

Kara’s pitch queen! Is she going to be pitchy or will she pull through.  Unfortunately, she was a tad pitchy.  I don’t get it because she actually has a good voice under there but something’s always off.  I think performance-wise and vocal ability she did pretty good but she went back to her old-fashioned ways when she could have continued the youth route and sang another contemporary song.  The judges are correct, Katie is going in the right direction vocally, but wrong era.  Enough said.

Elimination: So-so (She was in the bottom last week, did she do enough to get out of the bottom 3 or will she find herself there again?)

Lee Dewyze 30

Unlike Tim, I actually love Lee’s voice and his overall appeal and this genre suits him perfectly.  I don’t see how he will mess this up even if there is a lot of bias on my part.  Will he live up to Usher’s praises?  Yes Yes Yes!! He was on fire tonight.  It was just him on stage with his guitar doing what Lee does… wow!!!  Lee’s performance was upbeat and I agree with Simon completely, if he knew how good he was and his confidence showed it, he would sail to another level, but that’s something I hope he hones soon to perfect his performance ability.  But from an emotional standpoint he edged Michael’s performance by a smidgen.

Elimination: Very Safe (He should plan his coronation song at this point!)

Crystal Bowersox 30

She says there is a surprise this week?  Heels and the piano!! What instrument doesn’t she play.  And then she steps away from the piano and sings front and center.  I got goosebump’s when she hit those high notes.  This was a different direction for her but still her.  But I do agree with Simon that she is the only person who truly knows who she is.  Props for doing something different and not look awkward, but enhancing her performance abilities.

Elimination: Very Safe (Plan something else.  I’ll buy anything you do. Wait, figure out your finale song as well)

Aaron Kelly 27

Nasal country king Aaron made a fan out of Usher.  I actually didn’t like that nasal quality when i first heard him in the beginning of the season but grew to accept this as his signature vocal ability.  Now that line that Usher was looking for him to nail, the “I Know, I know..” didn’t have the impact that I thought Usher was looking for, or even i was expecting.  Overall the song was good and the judges “liked” it which isn’t the best critique but I don’t think he has anything to worry about tonight.

Elimination: Safe (He hasn’t had any trouble thus far and shouldn’t face any this week)

My top 10:

  1. Lee Dewyze
  2. Michael Lynche
  3. Crystal Bowersox
  4. Casey James
  5. Andrew Garcia
  6. Aaron Kelly
  7. Katie Stevens
  8. Siobhan Magnus
  9. Tim Urban
  10. Didi Benami

Final Thoughts: Lee, Michael and Crystal were on a different level tonight.  However both Casey and Andrew were not too far from that bar.  Siobhan had an off-night which will definitely test her appeal to the audience whether it puts her in the bottom 3 or whether she will sail through on that appeal.  Katie, Tim and Didi are the strongest possibilities for the bottom 3 with Didi going home!

Result: Didi is eliminated! No surprise there.  She was weak last night and she struggle in the last few weeks to find herself.  Tim was a close second once again.  He is the Sanjaya this season, although for his defense he does have the teen vote.

American Idol Top 12

March 16, 2010

“Overall the top 12 was pretty good as a whole, but I didn’t see essence of The Rolling Stones in most of the performances.  I was expecting more energy and rock n roll.  At least the contestants were able to show their true colors through their arrangements which is commendable. If this competition were a battle of the sexes, the girls definitely ruled tonight with a perfect performance by Siobhan Magnus”

Michael Lynche 28

His confidence is definitely showing and his stage presence is very powerful.  However, I was hoping he would stick to his new formal style and keep to the suits, but besides that it was good but not as good as last week.

Didi Benami 27

She has such a unique voice and she remained consistent from last week.  Somehow she does so much better when her performance his stripped down with a guitar.

Casey James 28

This is definitely the type of music style that suits Casey.  The bluesy-country style! Although vocally he was good, I would have preferred more use of the stage.  Sometimes even if you stand in one spot, you could own the stage.  I just didn’t feel that from him.

Lacey Brown 25

She did okay, but it still baffles me how she made it in over Katelyn and Lilly!!  Besides that, she didn’t do anything different and I did notice that she like to sit on the edge of the stage.  It worked before, but maybe a different approach next time.

Andrew Garcia 26

Andrew is my Danny Gokey of this year.  I was a huge fan!!!  Only difference is while I was drawn away from Danny fan-club midway through the season after I became bored, I am already over Andrew.  After Straight Up, nothing has been the same and I feel that his time will be coming very soon if he continues down this rut.

Katie Stevens 27

She was definitely far improved from previous weeks, however, I was comparing her rendition to Susan Boyle’s and it was somewhat off.  It was good in parts, but overall a big improvement.

Tim Urban 25

His vocals have definitely improved and after last week, he has improved considerably.  However, it was an interesting song choice for me and the arrangement was quite odd!

Siobhan Magnus 30

This girl is amazing.  Her vocal range is outstanding.  The performance was dramatic and that last note was out of this world.  She looked amazing in her Harajuku-esque style and this was definitely her best performance.

Lee Dewyze 27

He definitely stands out in his own way and I agree that he needs to break out more.  With that voice he can rock it out, but he remained safe but sure.  If it works it works, but he can take it a step further.

Paige Miles 27

For someone who had laryngitis this week she did an amazing job especially considering her poor vocals last week.  The performance was okay, but she did mention this was her first real practice this week.  Being the one that counts, she did a good job

Aaron Kelly 28

Aaron was great this week.  His vocals were on point and he really connected to this song which made it more believable and stand out.

Crystal Bowersox 28

There is nobody quite like this girl and even her off-performance is miles better over other performers.  She may have not delivered her best, but considering she is such a strong favorite, there is so much expectations from her that anything negative can be blown out of proportion.

My top 12:

  1. Siobhan Magnus
  2. Aaron Kelly
  3. Casey James
  4. Crystal Bowersox
  5. Michael Lynche
  6. Didi Benami
  7. Lee Dewyze
  8. Katie Stevens
  9. Paige Miles
  10. Andrew Garcia
  11. Lacey Brown
  12. Tim Urban

Final Thoughts: Siobhan Magnus was the unexpected star of the night delivering a standout performance from start to end.  Crystal may have been off her game but was still good.  Lacey and Tim showed why they shouldn’t be in the competition and either should be the first casualty in the top 12.  However, Paige’s laryngitis may also play into the voting.  Her top 12 placement was also unexpected and she may also be up for elimination.

Result: No surprises here.  Tim, Lacey and Paige were in the bottom three.  Tim was the first one who was safe with Lacey and Paige in the bottom 2.  Lacey was eliminated and the judges chose to let her go.  Once again, a wasted spot for someone else.  In the end the judges were right no the mark.

American Idol Top 8 Boys

March 10, 2010

“One thing that has been true on American Idol is the uncertain and the surprises.  The guys are an interesting bunch.  Not as unique as the girls, but there are a few standouts.  What was surprising was that arguably the worst singer among the guys came out almost on top and one of the front-runners flopped.  This will make for an interesting elimination episode.”

Lee Dewyze 27

Another consistent performance and popular song choice! He did add his own take on the song and it was good, but what is going to get him through to the top 16 is his voice and his overall appeal.

Alex Lambert 26

This guy is definitely improving his stage presence although he is still not there quite yet.  Vocally he is still beyond his competitors in terms of its distinct unique flavor; however, the performance was just okay.  I kept comparing it to the soul and believability of Taylor Hicks and it fell short.  I still like this guy though.

Tim Urban 29

Where did he come from?  I honestly thought after knowing the song he was going to sing it was the kiss of death.  But he came out tonight looking good and his acoustic rendition was amazing.  I felt like I was watching a different performer on the stage who was both believable and vocally on point.

Andrew Garcia 24

Is it a challenge for him to pick the most random songs and try to make it work?  Couldn’t he have picked a newer song to change up instead of Genie in a Bottle?  Another off-night again and I hope if he makes it through that he can pull it together soon because he may lose a fan in me!

Casey James 26

Another consistent performance but it was the type of song played in a set and not a stand along song to sing for the top 16.  However, good or not, I doubt Casey has much to worry about.

Aaron Kelly 25

He started shaky which put me off, but did recover at the end.  I will say though that unlike another young singer on the girl’s side, at least Aaron knows exactly who he is and that makes him stand out.

Todrick Hall 26

This guy knows how to take direction well.  The first show he changed the song too much so he changed.  The second show he did too much with his vocals and he changed again.  This time he was able to find a health medium.  However, there were a few too many runs here and there and whether he came out on top after his third attempt; he may still be in danger.

Michael Lynche 30

If last week he became the best male performer, this week he even outshined Crystal Bowersox.  There is nothing I can fault for this song and he did everything right.  This was definitely the best performance of the season so far and he hit it out of the ball park.

My top 8:

  1. Michael Lynche
  2. Tim Urban
  3. Lee Dewyze
  4. Alex Lambert
  5. Casey James
  6. Todrick Hall
  7. Aaron Kelly
  8. Andrew Garcia

Final Thoughts: One thing that is for certain, Michael Lynche is the one to beat among the guys and outshined Crystal Bowersox this week.  If the competition ended tonight, it would be between the two of them.  Surprisingly, Tim Urban came out of nowhere with that gutsy and memorable performance.  The funny thing was that before the show I was certain he was going home this week.  Andrew Garcia on the other hand will test his popularity tomorrow after his worst performance.  Among the top 8, anyone from 4-8 can be eliminated.  On performances alone I would say Aaron and Andrew, but I think it could also be Todrick and Alex so I am expecting a surprise tomorrow night.

Update: For the first round of eliminations, they place Casey, Lee, Tim, and Todrick on the stage.  Casey and surprisingly Tim (who nailed his performance last night) were the first to make the top 12.  Todrick and Lee were left on stage and Todrick was sent home.  At least one obvious elimination tonight.  He did better last night but he hasn’t been consistent and it was his time.  On the other elimination duo, Andrew and Alex were next and Alex was eliminated.  It was such a pity because Alex had an amazing voice but lacked the confidence and personality.  Andrew on the other hand suffered from back to back poor performances.  Lucky for Andrew, he made it through because he was the huge favorite going into the semi’s and that’s why he made the top 12!!

American Idol Top 10 Boys

March 2, 2010

“Despite having less time to prepare this week due to the switch of nights, I felt for the most part the guys stepped up and a lot of them are standing out as potential front-runners and upsets.  The biggest fail this week were the judges.  Why do some contestants have to sing the original version while others need to change it up and make it new.  Hasn’t the latter been what American Idol is about.  David Cook, Kris Allen, Adam Lambert all did and they won, so what is going on?  I almost feel like they are either agreeing with their fellow judges or trying to say something different for the sake of saying something different.  If i were a contestant i would be so confused.  How can i get better if i get complete opposites with what I am being told.  Did i do good or was i bad?  Although the judges weren’t on top of their game this week, the boys were!”

The scores are based on vocal ability, appearance, song choice, personality, stage presence and impact out of a possible 30 points! EPIC (29-30) GREAT (27-28) GOOD (25-26) OK (23-25) FAIL (22 and below)

Here are the guys grades in order of performance:

Michael Lynche 29

If last week was the supporting act, this week was the main show and a completely different person and performer.

John Park 24

He was definitely a lot better than last week but it was a safe and forgettable performance for someone who is trying to stand out.

Casey James 26

He is amazing on the guitar but was nowhere near the caliber of Elliot Yamin or Bo Bice!

Alex Lambert 29

This performance was night and day compared to last week and i predicted something like this could happen.  His voice rivals that of Jason Mraz and John Mayer, but can easily be identifiable if recorded.  I knew if he survived this week and got better with his stage presence he could do something good and that’s exactly what he did!

Todrick Hall 24

He took a different turn from last week.  Although he showed more of his vocals, his personality disappeared.  There were too many runs and he does too much to the song.

Jermaine Sellers 25

Jermaine had a good point about church.  I almost feel like the judges just don’t understand gospel/rnb voices.  I felt emotion I just don’t think he did the song justice.

Andrew Garcia 25

I didn’t get it.  Last week was more on the lines of what to expect from Andrew but the wrong song choice.  This week was just blah.  Has he already lost his flair?

Aaron Kelly 26

He had a weird vibration to his voice this week that kind of lingered all throughout.  More personality but vocally not as good as last week.  Didn’t see what the judges did!

Tim Urban 23

I still don’t get him.  I totally agree with Ellen here.  His voice is nothing different than we have heard before and if he stays it’ll be because of his looks because his voice is definitely not a reason.  His reaction to Simon’s comments were funny.  Sorry Tim, all Simon really said was that you were better than last week.. that’s not saying too much when 3/4 of your fellow competitors did too.

Lee Dewyze 27

This guy has a phenomenal voice and look and if there were pitchy parts, I didn’t hear them just because of the tone of his voice that makes it acceptable.   With or without his guitar he can do no wrong!

My top 10:

  1. Michael Lynche
  2. Alex Lambert
  3. Lee Dewyze
  4. Casey James
  5. Aaron Kelly
  6. Jermaine Sellers
  7. Andrew Garcia
  8. Todrick Hall
  9. John Park
  10. Tim Urban

Final Thoughts: Considering last week’s Joe Munoz was really the only one who had the least amount of TV coverage, that wouldn’t apply this week.  Instead it boils down to who stepped up the most.  Alex could have easily been in the next wave to go but his incredible improvement may have saved him at least for another week.  I think John Park and Tim Urban are the weakest among the bunch although both slightly improved over last week.   Falling in the category of doing too much are Todrick and Jermaine who could easily switch places with either of the two who I predict to be eliminated this week!

Update: John and Jermaine are out.  Tim stays another week?  Is this really looks or are people hearing something i don’t.  Both John and Jermaine are so much better singers but just didn’t make that connection with the audience.

American Idol Top 12 Boys

February 24, 2010

“I guess Simon was right about the girls being better this year.  The problem with the boys was the lack of overall originality or star factor.  Even the favorites were either safe, too creative or over-sang their songs.  There was definitely a lack of confidence and a lot of nerves.  None of the guys really struck the right cord with me; however there were some who were able to rise above it al:”

The scores are based on vocal ability, appearance, song choice, personality, stage presence and impact out of a possible 30 points! EPIC (29-30) GREAT (27-28) GOOD (25-26) OK (23-25) FAIL (22 and below)

Here are the girl’s grades in order of performance:

Todrick Hall – 25 Super-confident and completely changed up the song!  Points for being creative, but in this case, the original was way better!!

Aaron Kelly – 27 He has a big ole country voice, but he reminds me so much of Kevin Covais and I am trying to connect the image with the voice.

Jermaine Sellers – 24 Started rough and remained there throughout.  He showed a lot of personality but did too much with the song.

Tim Urban – 21 He started ok but fell apart with his horrible falsetto.  The song was way too big for him.

Joe Munoz – 24 He looked confident but his voice sounded so nervous and had a vibrating quality to it.  I don’t know if that’s really how he sings since this is the first full performance I have seen of him, but he has potential.

Tyler Grady – 24 Second-rate Jim Morrison wannabe and it came off as trying hard.

Lee Dewyze – 26 I liked the arrangement and although there were some rough patches, he showcased an amazing voice!

John Park – 23 Another rough start.  Too many nerves and although he kind of came back, It was too late!

Michael Lynche – 25 I wish he didn’t have the guitar because it looked like a prop.  He could have worked the stage instead.  He was good but it was a safe performance that stood out amidst the lukewarm group.

Alex Lambert – 23 He has a good voice but he seemed so uncomfortable and didn’t know what to do in front of the camera.

Casey James – 27 I thought his performance was somewhat overshadowed by Kara and what was going on in the judges panel.  Despite that he was definitely very good at tackling the song and did a really good job.

And the pimp spot award goes to…..

Andrew Garcia– 28 Of course, being my favorite contestant so far, I would be biased but I thought he did an amazing job.  The song choice was interesting and I felt like he picked the most random song to make work and he should have picked an easier song to take out of the park.

My top 12:

  1. Andrew Garcia
  2. Casey James
  3. Aaron Kelly
  4. Lee Dewyze
  5. Michael Lynche
  6. Todrick Hall
  7. Joe Munoz
  8. Tyler Grady
  9. Jermaine Sellers
  10. Alex Lambert
  11. John Park
  12. Tim Urban

Final Thoughts: The guys were definitely a weaker bunch and my favorites didn’t really shine as much as I would have liked to.  Andrew took the pimp spot as expected and although he picked an unusual song, I think he picked the right song to attract the attention of the younger audience as well as showcase his unique ability to make a song his own.  Aaron and Casey stood out among the bunch while John who was one of my favorites and Tim are the likely two who will leave in the elimination show.  Both picked the wrong songs and fell flat.  Alex should also worry because of his awkward performance but his strong and unique vocals could keep him around.

Update: Joe and Tyler are out! Surprise surprise!!  I guess it would make sense considering the guys in general were pretty weak so surprises were expected.  Joe was unfortunate because he never got enough coverage to really stand out and his moment wasn’t a strong one.  Tyler on the other hand had such an interesting personality.  I just think his second-rate Jim Morrison was the reason for his demise, another case of song choice.

American Idol Top 24 Contestants

February 22, 2010

“The girls are the standouts this year.  Not just because the producers and Simon Cowel feel that a girl will win but they really do have the best vocals among the top 24.  The Colbie Caillat’s, Duffy’s, Janis Joplin’s, and Adele’s are the types of voices that are one in a million and many of this years top 12 girls actually fall in the between.  Among the girls, Crystal Bowersox offers something unique.  Not just her dreadlocks but also her vocal abilities.  She also plays a couple of instruments which will definitely help her sail  through to the finals”

“Although the girls as a whole are a strong bunch, I do believe there are a few guys who could end up in the finals as well.  Andrew Garcia is the standout and reminds me of Danny Gokey, however, I believe Garcia is one step up and in my opinion is the one to beat.  Coming up very close behind is a trio of rnb/pop vocalists who could easily join the likes of Maxwell, Jason Derulo, Neyo and Chris Brown!  These three are the typical Idol powerhouses with the big voices and should definitely be around for awhile”
