American Idol Top 10

March 30, 2010

“So now we get some behind-the-scenes after the performances and a 2-hour show.  What does that mean?  More un-necessary footage and commentary from the judges to confuse the contestants and a lot more critique from this week’s mentor!  Although this weeks mentor is actually quite credible and made a lot of great performances happen. This was by far my favorite night for the entire season.  3 perfect scores and everyone was good despite a few missteps. ”

The scores are based on vocal ability, appearance, song choice, personality, stage presence and impact out of a possible 30 points! EPIC (29-30) GREAT (27-28) GOOD (25-26) OK (23-25) FAIL (22 and below)

Here are the guy’s grades in order of performance:

Siobhan Magnus 26

Her awkwardness is actually quite appealing.  Usher didn’t expect that voice like most of us when we first heard her.  Her fashion sense and her quirky personality make her unique and that vocal ability sets her apart.  Tonight, somehow her vocals and appearance were off.  Even that high-note didn’t work out and there was a lot of pitch problems.  Her weakest performance of the season so far and that last note seems like a signature high for her, but tonight it was too much.

Elimination: So-so (This is the first test of her popularity.  Not a good performance.  Has she been coasting or does she have a true following.  We will see!)

Casey James 29

He’s right.  What better theme than rnb/soul which is so close to his blues genre.  This should be his comfort zone.  Verdict?  He nails it vocally.  Everything works except his look.  Someone I almost wish he had a beard or a goatee because he looks like a pop-star with that big bluesy voice.  That aside I guess he is a commercial blues singer.  His best performance to date though and Simon was on point.  Don’t understand what Kara or Ellen were hearing because he showed a lot of range and performance ability.  What the hell is this show going to do without Simon?

Elimination: Very Safe (Start planning your next performance!!)

Michael Lynche 30

Connecting with the audience, I am pretty sure he has no problem doing that.  I was worried because the first time he had a guitar on him in the very first episode, he was kind of corny and didn’t connect emotionally, so I was legitimately worried.  However, this was night and day and an amazing acoustic rendition of the song and if the judges were looking for a moment, he had one!  Outstanding vocals and even if it was a gloomy song he sold it.

Elimination: Very Safe (He’ll be around till the end if he continues on this route)

Didi Benami 25

She had an emotional connection to the song and a moment that caused her to cry in front of Usher.  Will she translate that on stage?  No.  The arrangement and the key changes unfortunately didn’t work!  I thought it was theatrical, dramatic and overdone for no reason.  Was she trying to create the emotion through dramatization?  She tried to show some range, but it was a little too forced and a little too much.  I wish she translated her emotions into a much more simple arrangement that let her vocals speak for her emotions.

Elimination: Bottom 3 (Not good.  This could be her downfall)

Tim Urban 26

Why is he still here?  The abs?  The hair?  And the way he sung that song to Usher was right on point on Usher’s part.  I didn’t believe it either.  Will he connect to the audience?  No. His eyes just looked so vacant on stage.  He looked like he was trying to make sure he got the vocals out and although they sounded good, it was just boring and plain.  The whole performance was so old-fashioned and cruisy!! Last week he was singing to his target market and this week he was trying to reach a new crowd and it didn’t work.  Unfortunately for me, he has a huge fan club and that may keep him around, although I am hoping for a different result.

Elimination: Bottom 3 (He was there last week and this performance didn’t really gain him any points)

Andrew Garcia 28

Is he back?  A great acoustic rendition of the song and more in line with Andrew’s type of music, but am I digging it because I like the song or is it because he’s done so poorly the last few weeks that its refreshing to see him back on track.  Maybe a mix of both which I think is very smart on his part.  His fans may have rekindled the love for him too. The judges comments of course, were overwhelmingly positive but is it fair to glorify him for it?  I suppose being a former favorite for the title, its acceptable and worth the praise, but will it continue or is it a fluke?

Elimination: Safe (Should be safe considering the positive feedback but has the previous few weeks caught up to him?)

Katie Stevens 27

Kara’s pitch queen! Is she going to be pitchy or will she pull through.  Unfortunately, she was a tad pitchy.  I don’t get it because she actually has a good voice under there but something’s always off.  I think performance-wise and vocal ability she did pretty good but she went back to her old-fashioned ways when she could have continued the youth route and sang another contemporary song.  The judges are correct, Katie is going in the right direction vocally, but wrong era.  Enough said.

Elimination: So-so (She was in the bottom last week, did she do enough to get out of the bottom 3 or will she find herself there again?)

Lee Dewyze 30

Unlike Tim, I actually love Lee’s voice and his overall appeal and this genre suits him perfectly.  I don’t see how he will mess this up even if there is a lot of bias on my part.  Will he live up to Usher’s praises?  Yes Yes Yes!! He was on fire tonight.  It was just him on stage with his guitar doing what Lee does… wow!!!  Lee’s performance was upbeat and I agree with Simon completely, if he knew how good he was and his confidence showed it, he would sail to another level, but that’s something I hope he hones soon to perfect his performance ability.  But from an emotional standpoint he edged Michael’s performance by a smidgen.

Elimination: Very Safe (He should plan his coronation song at this point!)

Crystal Bowersox 30

She says there is a surprise this week?  Heels and the piano!! What instrument doesn’t she play.  And then she steps away from the piano and sings front and center.  I got goosebump’s when she hit those high notes.  This was a different direction for her but still her.  But I do agree with Simon that she is the only person who truly knows who she is.  Props for doing something different and not look awkward, but enhancing her performance abilities.

Elimination: Very Safe (Plan something else.  I’ll buy anything you do. Wait, figure out your finale song as well)

Aaron Kelly 27

Nasal country king Aaron made a fan out of Usher.  I actually didn’t like that nasal quality when i first heard him in the beginning of the season but grew to accept this as his signature vocal ability.  Now that line that Usher was looking for him to nail, the “I Know, I know..” didn’t have the impact that I thought Usher was looking for, or even i was expecting.  Overall the song was good and the judges “liked” it which isn’t the best critique but I don’t think he has anything to worry about tonight.

Elimination: Safe (He hasn’t had any trouble thus far and shouldn’t face any this week)

My top 10:

  1. Lee Dewyze
  2. Michael Lynche
  3. Crystal Bowersox
  4. Casey James
  5. Andrew Garcia
  6. Aaron Kelly
  7. Katie Stevens
  8. Siobhan Magnus
  9. Tim Urban
  10. Didi Benami

Final Thoughts: Lee, Michael and Crystal were on a different level tonight.  However both Casey and Andrew were not too far from that bar.  Siobhan had an off-night which will definitely test her appeal to the audience whether it puts her in the bottom 3 or whether she will sail through on that appeal.  Katie, Tim and Didi are the strongest possibilities for the bottom 3 with Didi going home!

Result: Didi is eliminated! No surprise there.  She was weak last night and she struggle in the last few weeks to find herself.  Tim was a close second once again.  He is the Sanjaya this season, although for his defense he does have the teen vote.

American Idol Top 12

March 16, 2010

“Overall the top 12 was pretty good as a whole, but I didn’t see essence of The Rolling Stones in most of the performances.  I was expecting more energy and rock n roll.  At least the contestants were able to show their true colors through their arrangements which is commendable. If this competition were a battle of the sexes, the girls definitely ruled tonight with a perfect performance by Siobhan Magnus”

Michael Lynche 28

His confidence is definitely showing and his stage presence is very powerful.  However, I was hoping he would stick to his new formal style and keep to the suits, but besides that it was good but not as good as last week.

Didi Benami 27

She has such a unique voice and she remained consistent from last week.  Somehow she does so much better when her performance his stripped down with a guitar.

Casey James 28

This is definitely the type of music style that suits Casey.  The bluesy-country style! Although vocally he was good, I would have preferred more use of the stage.  Sometimes even if you stand in one spot, you could own the stage.  I just didn’t feel that from him.

Lacey Brown 25

She did okay, but it still baffles me how she made it in over Katelyn and Lilly!!  Besides that, she didn’t do anything different and I did notice that she like to sit on the edge of the stage.  It worked before, but maybe a different approach next time.

Andrew Garcia 26

Andrew is my Danny Gokey of this year.  I was a huge fan!!!  Only difference is while I was drawn away from Danny fan-club midway through the season after I became bored, I am already over Andrew.  After Straight Up, nothing has been the same and I feel that his time will be coming very soon if he continues down this rut.

Katie Stevens 27

She was definitely far improved from previous weeks, however, I was comparing her rendition to Susan Boyle’s and it was somewhat off.  It was good in parts, but overall a big improvement.

Tim Urban 25

His vocals have definitely improved and after last week, he has improved considerably.  However, it was an interesting song choice for me and the arrangement was quite odd!

Siobhan Magnus 30

This girl is amazing.  Her vocal range is outstanding.  The performance was dramatic and that last note was out of this world.  She looked amazing in her Harajuku-esque style and this was definitely her best performance.

Lee Dewyze 27

He definitely stands out in his own way and I agree that he needs to break out more.  With that voice he can rock it out, but he remained safe but sure.  If it works it works, but he can take it a step further.

Paige Miles 27

For someone who had laryngitis this week she did an amazing job especially considering her poor vocals last week.  The performance was okay, but she did mention this was her first real practice this week.  Being the one that counts, she did a good job

Aaron Kelly 28

Aaron was great this week.  His vocals were on point and he really connected to this song which made it more believable and stand out.

Crystal Bowersox 28

There is nobody quite like this girl and even her off-performance is miles better over other performers.  She may have not delivered her best, but considering she is such a strong favorite, there is so much expectations from her that anything negative can be blown out of proportion.

My top 12:

  1. Siobhan Magnus
  2. Aaron Kelly
  3. Casey James
  4. Crystal Bowersox
  5. Michael Lynche
  6. Didi Benami
  7. Lee Dewyze
  8. Katie Stevens
  9. Paige Miles
  10. Andrew Garcia
  11. Lacey Brown
  12. Tim Urban

Final Thoughts: Siobhan Magnus was the unexpected star of the night delivering a standout performance from start to end.  Crystal may have been off her game but was still good.  Lacey and Tim showed why they shouldn’t be in the competition and either should be the first casualty in the top 12.  However, Paige’s laryngitis may also play into the voting.  Her top 12 placement was also unexpected and she may also be up for elimination.

Result: No surprises here.  Tim, Lacey and Paige were in the bottom three.  Tim was the first one who was safe with Lacey and Paige in the bottom 2.  Lacey was eliminated and the judges chose to let her go.  Once again, a wasted spot for someone else.  In the end the judges were right no the mark.

American Idol Top 8 Girls

March 9, 2010

“For the show when the contestants are singing for the top 12, it was pretty weak.  Crystal remained on top proving that she is the one to beat, but the rest of the crop was for the most part once again riddled with bad song choices and less than memorable performances.”

The scores are based on vocal ability, appearance, song choice, personality, stage presence and impact out of a possible 30 points! EPIC (29-30) GREAT (27-28) GOOD (25-26) OK (23-25) FAIL (22 and below)

Here are the girl’s grades in order of performance:

Katie Stevens 24

She picked a younger song but she didn’t do anything with it and it fell short.  What type of singer does she really want to be?  This is American Idol, not tell me what to do each week so I can improve.

Siobhan Magnus 28

I am starting to like this girl.  Her voice is amazing in its lower and upper register and she picks some very interesting songs that she owns.  She takes these male songs and makes them female.

Lacey Brown 27

She definitely picked the right song for her voice.  She was better than the last two weeks which made this performance sound so much better than it really was, but good timing and good choice.

Katelyn Epperly 24

It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either.  It was the song you would play within a set and it really didn’t make her stand out.  She did such a great job the last two weeks, that it almost felt like a different singer was on stage.

Didi Benami 28

Her voice is amazing and she really changed it up here.  She does ballads like this so well and it was a record-worthy performance

Paige Miles 23

She started off a little shaky and remained awkward throughout.  That big ole voice was wasted again and she should have picked a power ballad.  When it really counted, she failed.

Crystal Bowersox 30

While most people have had issues picking songs, that has never been an issue for Crystal and she continues to prove why she is the best performer in this competition.  The performance was miles above the rest.

Lilly Scott 26

For some strange reason, her vocals weren’t as good as they usually are.  Her personality and uniqueness were there but I wasn’t wowed by it.

My top 8:

  1. Crystal Bowersox
  2. Siobhan Magnus
  3. Didi Benami
  4. Lacey Brown
  5. Lilly Scott
  6. Katie Stevens
  7. Katelyn Epperly
  8. Paige Miles

Final Thoughts: This is definitely going to be one of the biggest surprises of the season so far.  Although Paige is a great singer, her performance was her weakest which came at the wrong time amidst other girls who already have strong fan clubs.  Two of the major front-runners Katie Stevens and Katelyn Epperly failed to impress which will definitely make the results interesting while Lacey Brown and Didi Benami who failed last week improved this week.  However, it seems Crystal is the only safe bet with Siobhan and Didi a distant second and third.  Anyone from 4-7 may be eliminated and it’s definitely going to be a shocker.

Update: As expected, there was going to be a surprise around the corner.  Ironic how the two i had picked to go home were the two standing on stage for the elimination.  So of course you figure Paige should go because she was not the best last night, but instead Katelyn, one of the previous favorites went home.  Paige is through and as Simon says, she was one of the best in Hollywood so her place is deserved.  She has to have a stronger showing in the top 12 because she was just given the biggest second chance!!  In the other elimination duo are Lilly and Katie, both favorites.  Katie was a front-runner at one point while Lily has a unique look and voice.  Going home is Lilly! This one was as big of a shocker as Katelyn.  Two strong singers from the women’s side are out and the men’s side just became the stronger side!

American Idol Top 10 Girls

March 3, 2010

“Although the guys improved more this week, most of the girls remained consistent or improved besides a handful of girls who need to choose the right songs to match their vocal ability.  What I like about the girls is the variety.  Each girl offers different personalities and vocal abilities that make them standout.  I truly believe the girls as a whole are better and most of them if given the right song can actually become a star and that just shows the strength of the girls over the boys this season.”

The scores are based on vocal ability, appearance, song choice, personality, stage presence and impact out of a possible 30 points! EPIC (29-30) GREAT (27-28) GOOD (25-26) OK (23-25) FAIL (22 and below)

Here are the guys grades in order of performance:

Crystal Bowersox 30

I did not expect this girl to do Gospel this good and for someone who was in the hospital the day before, she sure doesn’t show it.  Her vocals and performance ability were spot on and this was my favorite performance of the season so far!!

Haeley Vaughn 25

Slight bias! I like her and I like this song so it’s tough to criticize her.  However, from a technical standpoint, it was not good at all.

Lacey Brown 25

Good song choice but for the most part it was exactly the same as the original.  Definitely a big improvement from last week but I still don’t see what’s so special about her vocals.

Katie Stevens 26

How is she a front-runner?  She is just 17 but I don’t think she really knows who she is yet!  But she is a pretty girl who will definitely make it through another week.

Didi Benami 25

She looks amazing on camera but why sing Lean on Me and why move away from what you are good at.  This song didn’t match her vocal abilities.

Michelle Delamor 27

The beginning was definitely better than the rest of the song but she could have made a stand with this and fell short.  I still think she gave a valiant effort and if recorded this could be great, but she couldn’t reach some of those high notes.

Lilly Scott 28

I really like this girl.  She can pick any song and really make it her own because those vocals are so unique and that look is different.  Definitely one of the ones to watch.

Katelyn Epperly 29

That was stripped down and raw.  She completely changed it and it was amazing.  It was a bit slow but I think it came off great and her vocals are really good.

Paige Miles 27

I agree this girl has a big ole voice but the song choices aren’t allowing her to show it.  She can do a power ballad like “I Have Nothing” or “All By Myself” and I am sure she can hit those high notes, but she is growing on me.

Siobhan Magnus 27

That last note is noteworthy alone and its so surprising that this girl with the weird personality has so much personality when she sings.  There were some pitchy parts but it ended on such a high that you can forget it and after last week’s haunting performance she shows us another side of her vocal range.

My top 10:

  1. Crystal Bowersox
  2. Katelyn Epperly
  3. Siobhan Magnus
  4. Lily Scott
  5. Michelle Delamor
  6. Paige Miles
  7. Katie Stevens
  8. Didi Benami
  9. Lacey Brown
  10. Haeley Vaughn

Final Thoughts:  Crystal is truly in a league of her own and I would be surprised if she doesn’t make it to the finale.  If she sounded like a subway singer last week, she definitely didn’t this week. It’s great when the right girl, Crystal and even Katelyn and the right song combine because it works.  But the girls standing out as a whole is a problem as well.  Anyone from 5-10, with the exception of Katie are unfortunately in danger of being eliminated this week depending on whose fan clubs are bigger.   However, If I were to choose between 5-10, Haeley and Lacey are the weakest of the bunch at least based on this week and last week’s performances.

Update:  As expected, anyone from 5-10 was in danger and my number 5 was Michelle.  The other girl going home this week is Haeley!  I personally felt it was Lacey’s time to go this week over Michelle but Michelle did lose out due to the lack of coverage from the earlier rounds so any misstep at this stage was the reason why she went home.

American Idol Top 12 Girls

February 23, 2010

“Despite such high hopes for the girls, the night was a mixed bag.  Was the hype too much?  Most of the performances were copycats or second-rate versions of the original, some performances not as good as previous rounds, and others were just plain boring.  In the end, I was left underwhelmed.  Ironic that the Crystal and Katie, the two big frontrunners sang last and the girl who we never saw, Paige, started first.  Oh Idol, here are my thoughts”

Paige Miles – 24 She has the vocals, but they were just all over the place for this song.

Ashley Rodriguez – 23 She did the song in a lower key.  I was waiting for the wow moments and got nothing.

Janell Wheeler – 24 The song was way too big for her and she seemed to fall apart as the song went on.  After her rendition of American Boy, this was a far cry from that.

Lilly Scott – 26 She has a unique voice and I love the look.  The American Duffy!

Katelyn Epperly – 27 I love what she did with the song and she did a great job, but I also had a problem with her look.

Haeley Vaughn – 25 For all of the negative comments, I thought she did a good job.  It may sound like screeching to some, but I actually thought it worked!  Ellen said it was a “Hot Mess”!  Does she know what that really means?  Lol

Lacey Brown – 19 I didn’t like anything about this performance.

Michelle Delamor – 27 She actually changed the song up a bit and ended on a high note.  A great introduction to someone we haven’t really seen!

Didi Benami – 26 She sounded good.  Almost reminded me of Megan Joy from last year, but is this the best song to sing for votes?

Siobhan Magnus – 26 Interesting song choice.  I actually kind of liked it and she has a great lower register, she is kind of awkward though.

Crystal Bowersox – 28 I thought she sounded great and playing the harmonic and guitar, she gave us a two for one!

And the pimp spot award goes to…..

Katie Stevens – 26 I really wish she sang a more recent song!

My top 12:

  1. Crystal Bowersox
  2. Michelle Delamor
  3. Katelyn Epperly
  4. Lilly Scott
  5. Didi Benami
  6. Katie Stevens
  7. Siobhan Magnus
  8. Haeley Vaughn
  9. Janell Wheeler
  10. Paige Miles
  11. Ashley Rodriguez
  12. Lacey Brown

Final Thoughts: It was really hard to rank even based on scores.  Ranks 2-7 were equally as good and had positives and negatives.  Lacey and Ashley seem to be the girls that are going home on Thursday but Paige isn’t safe either.  Not only was this her first full performance for the TV audience, she was also first and her audio was off when they were showing her numbers at the end of the show.  It’s a little suspect, but I guess the show was having, “technical” difficulties.  Either way, it’s going to be a non-surprising conclusion on Thursday.

Update: Ashley and Janell are out.  If anything Janell was the most shocking because of her coverage throughout Hollywood.  But one thing  that both girls got wrong was their song choices which were not made for their vocal abilities, so in the end song choice was the main reason both were eliminated.

American Idol Top 24 Contestants

February 22, 2010

“The girls are the standouts this year.  Not just because the producers and Simon Cowel feel that a girl will win but they really do have the best vocals among the top 24.  The Colbie Caillat’s, Duffy’s, Janis Joplin’s, and Adele’s are the types of voices that are one in a million and many of this years top 12 girls actually fall in the between.  Among the girls, Crystal Bowersox offers something unique.  Not just her dreadlocks but also her vocal abilities.  She also plays a couple of instruments which will definitely help her sail  through to the finals”

Top 12 Girls:

  1. Crystal Bowersox
  2. Lilly Scott
  3. Katie Stevens
  4. Didi Benami
  5. Janel Wheeler
  6. Haeley Vaughn
  7. Katelyn Epperly
  8. Siobhan Magnus
  9. Michelle Dellamor
  10. Lacey Brown
  11. Ashley Rodriguez
  12. Paige Miles

“Although the girls as a whole are a strong bunch, I do believe there are a few guys who could end up in the finals as well.  Andrew Garcia is the standout and reminds me of Danny Gokey, however, I believe Garcia is one step up and in my opinion is the one to beat.  Coming up very close behind is a trio of rnb/pop vocalists who could easily join the likes of Maxwell, Jason Derulo, Neyo and Chris Brown!  These three are the typical Idol powerhouses with the big voices and should definitely be around for awhile”

My Top 12 Guys:

  1. Andrew Garcia
  2. Todrick Hall
  3. Michael Lynche
  4. Jermaine Sellers
  5. John Park
  6. Tyler Grady
  7. Casey James
  8. Lee Dewyze

American Idol: And The Remaining 24 Are Chosen!!

February 17, 2010

“37 Contestants left for 17 spots going into tonight’s show.  Some surprise exclusions and a lot of great talent”

Here is a reminder of the seven contestants who were already chosen and will perform for the audience in the top 24:

Michael Lynche – IN

My Grade: A-

Didi Benami – IN

My Grade: B-

Katelyn Epperly – IN

My Grade: C+

Casey James – IN

My Grade: B

Aaron Kelly – IN

My Grade: B

Lee Dewyze – IN

My Grade: B-

Todrick Hall – IN

My Grade: A

And this is where we begin the show…

These were the singers whose performances during different rounds or whose personal background stories were shown:

Janel Wheeler – IN

My Grade: B-

Tyler Grady – IN

My Grade: A-

Lacey Brown – IN

My Grade: B+

Crystal Bowersox – IN

My Grade: A

Katie Stevens – IN

My Grade: A-

Angela Martin – OUT

My Grade: B+

Lily Scott – IN

My Grade: B+

Haley Vaughn – IN

My Grade: B-

Tori Kelly – OUT

My Grade: B

Andrew Garcia – IN

My Grade: A+

Thaddeus Johnson – OUT

My Grade: A

Note: There was definitely some good news and bad news.  Every year we see some familiar faces.  Lacey Brown and Angela Martin have been in running in the past.  For Angela it was her third time, Lacey was in the same spot last year.  Fortunately Lacey made it through.  Angela, however, was let go.  This was definitely a surprise to me since the producers painted such an emotional story of her that we could connect with and I truly felt for her.  Will she come back for a 4th time?  Then there was the drama of the final two girls and guys.  Unlike previous years where the two were together, this year they weren’t. First, the girls and with some shock and awe editing resulted in Haley making it through!  Although Tori did have a good voice I think a country African-American singer is something different and unique!  Finally among the guys it was Thaddeus Johnson and Andrew Garcia.  This one was definitely the nail-biter which has me wondering how some of the other guys made it through over either of these two.  But I guess you can’t have it all and this would provide for a dramatic conclusion.  The winner was….Andrew!! And well deserved.

And these performers made it through but whose performances were not shown:

Ashley Rodriguez – IN

My Grade: B

Alex Lambert – IN

My Grade: B-

Joe Munoz – IN

My Grade: ??

Paige Miles – IN

My Grade: ??

Siobhan Magnus – IN

My Grade: B

Michelle Delamor – IN

My Grade: ??

Jermaine Sellers – IN

My Grade: A-

John Park – IN

My Grade: B+

Note: It’s always interesting to see who would be shown and who would end up in the montage.  There were some singers here who we have seen throughout on more than one occasion such as Jermaine Sellers, Siobhan Magnus, Ashley Rodriguez and Adam Lambert.  Some of the others we may have seen during the auditions but then were lost in the shuffle.  And then there were those that we never saw?  The ones I didn’t grade.  Will they be the Allison Iraheta or Bo Bice of this year?  Someone who comes out of nowhere will a killer voice?  We will have to wait and see.

Final thoughts:

Overall Hollywood week found a new method to show emotion without overdoing it and exploiting the contestants.  I always hated the long walk and the elevator ride especially when the contestant didn’t make it.  There was just something cruel about it and for those that did make it through, it was sometimes awkward.  This time around they spent more time showing their past performances and I felt it was appropriate that where one of them was going to win was where their journey of being chosen began.  I guess also focusing less on who wasn’t going to make it through, especially the ones we rarely saw was a good thing as well.  After all, we won’t remember them anyway.  I also like the editing of the final two contestants instead of having the final two sit side by side.  How do you jump for joy and share an elevator ride with the contestant who was probably your friend when you just won and she/he just lost?  This was definitely a much better format this year and although I did find it odd that 7 were selected yesterday with the remaining chosen today, the show was a lot more about the talent than the drama.  I guess idol is learning from their past by keeping the corny music and extra unnecessary effects during the audition rounds and focusing on the wider talent than a handful to give all of the contestants a fair chance at competing in front of the live audience.  I will conclude though, that whether the show is trying to attract a following so that a woman will win this year, but so far it is working because based on appearance alone, the women have it hands down.  Looks vs. talent, women vs. men?  Who will win American Idol Season 9? (check back next week for analysis and predictions of the top 24 contestants!)
