“Great star power and the musical of 2009″

Final Thoughts:

When i say its the musical of 2009, that really isn’t saying much.  Name another musical in 2009?  That aside, the film was good, but not on the same level as Marshall’s last directorial hit Chicago.  That film had the story, the music and the cast to support the musical.  In this case it was more Glee vs Rent.  Unfortunately Nine’s story is actually quite dull. A director who seems to be going through a mid-life crisis.  He has a big budget film to direct but does not not know what the story is about.  The musical numbers were definitely the highlight of the film and the transition from spoken word to song was actually done well although it was very hard to create an emotional attachment to any of the characters because we only had a few minutes of each at a time.  Marion Cotillard and Penelope Cruz who play the wife and mistress of Daniel Day Lewis’ character were quite memorable.  Their performances, including Day Lewis’ were quite stellar.  My favorite part of the film was actually the beginning and the end when all of the characters are introduced.  It was like the super-bowl of acting as each major star was ushered into the limelight.  This film worked for me because it boasted the most academy award winning cast, but in the same sense, they were also too big for their roles and it was difficult to overlook.  Overall though, it was definitely entertaining in most parts and worth the price of a ticket if you like Kidman, Cotillard, Cruz, Lewis, Dench, Hudson (Kate, not Jennifer), and Fergie (Yes, from Black Eyed Peas).

My grade: 93.5 (Watch It if you like the above named actors)

Rotten Tomatoes: 37 (Rotten)

MetaCritic: 48 (Mixed or average reviews)
