Alice In Wonderland

“A new take on an old classic in 3d through the twisted and fun world of Tim Burton”

Final Thoughts:

Directed by Tim Burton, the film is basically an original interpretation of the story.  In this case Alice comes back to wonderland 12 years later and must slay the Jabberwocky dragon controlled by the Red Queen.  Burton’s goal was to create a more cohesive and emotional story rather than a series of events that the original was known for.  My favorite part of the film was actually when Alice fell through the hole and was surrounded by the doors in which she enters wonderland.  The scene where she eats the potion to shrink and then eats the chocolate to grow to fit the door was everything I was expecting and thrilled to see until she opens the door and then it was a completely different story.

If I hadn’t watched Avatar, the 3d would have been fantastic, but it didn’t add anything to the film which I felt could have been watched in 2d.  Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter was a highlight.  He does crazy really well.  The art direction, score, costumes and makeup are also noteworthy.  However, from a story point of view, i would have preferred a re-telling of the original rather than a complete original without giving us a strong background to follow what is going on and why we should care.  At least if anything, its a visual treat and one of those films you really shouldn’t take to seriously.  And as an added bonus it boasts a star-studded cast that includes, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter.
